Mainland Greece

Ancient sun-bleached ruins pierce blue skies as the Aegean laps at the endless coastline. And Greek culture is alive with passionate music, inspired cuisine and thrill-seeking activities.

Cultural Treasure Chest

Standing in the shadow of the Acropolis feels other-worldly. Greece is full of such moments. Step into the ring where Olympians first competed. Climb steps hewn out of stone to Meteora’s monasteries, perched atop towering rocks. Contemplate the oracle’s insights from the grandeur of Delphi, take in a starlit drama at an ancient outdoor theatre and be stunned by massive marble sculptures dredged up from the Aegean. But then you’ll encounter bold modern art, the melancholic throb of rembetika (blues songs) and artisans creating new work from traditional techniques. Greece has endless cultural pursuits and a calendar bursting with festivals, holidays and exhibits.

Wildly Natural

Whether you’re a serious adrenalin junkie or dedicated beach bum, Greece will bewitch you. Days melt from one to the next under wide open skies and a sea speckled with islands that deliver the white-sand, palm-fringed beaches of your dreams. Wander along cobbled Byzantine footpaths, hike into volcanoes, watch for dolphins and sea turtles, and cycle through lush forests. Meander through olive groves, idyllic villages and petrified forests. Thrill seekers will discover world-class kitesurfing, wreck diving, and rock-climbing locations with dizzying views. Or simply hop on a boat and set sail into the glittering blue beyond.

Local Flavours

The secret to Greek cooking is often found in the chef’s garden. Basic ingredients such as feta and olive oil are at home across Greece, but the regional produce and cooking styles make travelling here a culinary adventure. Taste herbs and mountain greens you’ve never heard of, mussels steamed in ouzo, bread baked with olives, and fish straight from the sea. Taste-test regional cheeses: crumbling feta, honeyed soft cheeses and sharp, hard rounds. Find Italian influences in risottos and pastas or Turkish spices woven into delicate sweets. A traditional-cooking renaissance has chefs lifting time-honoured recipes to new gourmet heights.

Socially Spirited

Socialising is more than a pastime in Greece – it’s a way of life. Cafes overflow with teenagers gossiping or older locals in heated debate. Restaurants are filled with long tables for big gatherings and friends amble arm in arm down the street. Squares are the focal point, where life unfolds collectively. Immerse yourself, whether it’s a coffee, a shot of ouzo, a chorus on the bouzouki or a local celebration. Greeks are passionate and live life to the fullest, even at the most difficult times. The result is a country seemingly riddled with challenges, yet full of people loving life.

Athens Greece

With equal measures of grunge and grace, Athens is a heady mix of history and edginess. Cultural and social life plays out amid, around and in ancient landmarks. The magnificent Acropolis, visible from almost every part of the city, reminds Greeks daily of their heritage and the city's many transformations.

Forma

Although individuals have endured difficult circumstances since the start of the economic crisis in 2009, the city is on the rise. There is crackling energy in galleries, political debates and even on the walls of derelict buildings. This creates a lively urban bustle, but at the end of the day, Athenians build their own villages in the city, especially in open-air restaurants and bars where they linger for hours. Beyond Athens, down the Attica peninsula, are more spectacular antiquities, such as the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion, as well as very good beaches, such as those near historic Marathon.

Acropolis Museum â€“

The Acropolis Museum is consistently rated as one of the best museums in the world. Many previous travellers said the Acropolis Museum was one of the best museums they’d ever visited, citing the property’s displays as the perfect complement to the Acropolis’ ruins. Another plus: the museum’s design. Several visitors raved about the attraction’s construction, especially its glass floors that offer a peek at the ruins situated beneath the building.

Plaka â€“

First of all you need to get your bearings. Plaka is under the Acropolis and stretches almost to Syntagma Still, its assortment of restaurants and cafes keep it swarming with tourists each summer. You can also shop, especially if you’re looking to bring home some gold jewellery. Motor vehicles are not permitted on this neighbourhood’s winding streets, so make sure you have a street map and a comfortable pair of shoes. Visitors say Plaka offers a charming atmosphere and plenty of great shops for both souvenirs and one-of-a-kind finds. If you’d rather sip a drink once the sun goes down, travellers suggest visiting one (or several) of the area’s vibrant clubs or bars.

Parthenon â€“

An impressive example of ancient Greek architecture, the Parthenon is a cultural landmark like no other. It once served as a treasury and at another point housed a Christian church. Recent travellers loved visiting the Parthenon despite the ongoing restoration work that’s taking place on parts of the building’s exterior.

Temple of Hephaestus â€“

The Temple of Hephaestus is the best preserved ancient temple in Greece. It was dedicated to Hephaestus, the ancient god of fire and Athena, goddess of pottery and crafts. According to the archeologists, the temple was built around 450 B.C. at the western edge of the city, on top of Agoreos Koronos hill, and it is a classic example of Dorian architecture. The temple was designed by Iktinus, one of the talented architects who also worked on Parthenon, However, many other craftsmen worked at this fantastic temple. Eventually, the building was transformed into an archaeological museum before undergoing excavations in 1930 and later opening to tourists.

Astir Beach Vouliagmeni Beach â€“

This beach is one of the classics of the Athenian Riviera, and Astir Beach provides literally everything you might want for a day by the seaside. Squishy sun chairs for relaxing under the umbrella, full showers for rinsing off afterwards, a snack bar for nibbling, free Wi-Fi, organised beach sports… you can relax and feel sure that all your needs will be catered for. A little button on your sun chair means you can order munchies without even getting up. The beach can get crowded, especially at the weekends, but there’s always a sign at the entrance that announces if the lounge chairs have all been rented out.

Yabanaki Beach, Varkiza â€“

A little further past Vouliagmeni, Yabanki Beach is another gem of the Athens Riviera, and easily accessible from Athens. Inside the beach again you’ll find all the amenities to enjoy a full day on the water, from sun chairs and umbrellas to massages to a huge variety of active things to do. This is also a great beach for kids.

Sounion â€“

The Cape of Sounion is at the tip of the Attica peninsula, jutting out into the Aegean Sea. A swim here is not only about as far from Athens as you can get without a boat, but you’ll also get to take in the incredible Temple of Poseidon crowning the cape. Channel your inner sea god(ess), and it’s easy to see why the Ancient Greeks chose this spot to honour the ocean deity. The beach is lovely and sandy, and you can rent an umbrella and lounge chair for 5 euros, or just stretch out on the sand – and this is about the best way to enjoy that incredible sunset view, which is one of the best things to do in Athens.

Looking for the Best Bite to Eat?

Athens has a fine range of eateries ranging from down-to-earth traditional tavernas to upmarket restaurants serving fusion cuisine. In the city centre, is where you will find some excellent so-called modern tavernas, serving classic Greek dishes with a contemporary twist. Athens’ history and inspiring ancient architecture attracts hordes of visitors each year, and its buzzing restaurant scene explores these traditions and fuses them with cutting edge gastronomy. The city’s culinary landscape is peppered with unique destinations that push the boundaries of international and greek cuisines, as these ten restaurants reveal.

Here you can also find the delightful town of Sarti which offers plenty of restaurants for a lunch time break or evening supper. On the beautiful Aristotelis peninsula is the premier beach resort of Ouranoupolis whose beach is backed by a promenade lined with cafes and charming taverns. Petralona Cave â€“

Prehistoric cave full of stalactites & stalagmites with tours & an adjacent anthropological museum. The existence of an abundance of caves in a country, where 65% of the terrain is limestone, is perfectly normal. Besides, Greece is the second country after China with the largest number of caves in the world. Several thousand of these formations have been explored, mapped and studied, and more than 100 have been described as of remarkable interest το visitors. In 1959 a villager of Petralona, in Northern Greece, in his effort to find sources of water for the needs of the settlement, found a small cleft on the slopes of Mount Katsika. Two adventurous young men were lowered by rope to a depth of 13 meters and when they surfaced, they described the beautiful formations of stalactites and stalagmites, which they had seen for the first time in their lives.
